Yoga Therapy
Yoga-based intervention has been shown to significantly improve clinical symptoms and functioning in patients with schizophrenia. The Yoga Centre at NIMHANS has developed a specific module of Yoga as an add-on treatment in Schizophrenia and demonstrated significant improvement in symptoms (particularly negative symptoms and emotion recognition deficits) as well as real-life functioning. Some of this pioneering research has been recognized by the expert panel of National Institute of Healthy and Care Excellence (NICE) [UK] as “high quality” evidence, on the basis of which the recent NICE guidelines for treatment of schizophrenia in adults has included yoga as a complementary treatment in schizophrenia for the first time. A specific yoga module has also been developed for caregivers of patients with severe mental disorders, and this has been demonstrated to reduce their burden and improve quality of life.
The NIMHANS Integrated Centre for Yoga provides regular Yoga services to patients with psychosis and schizophrenia as well for their caregivers on all working days. For further information please visit the website of NIMHANS Integrated Centre for Yoga.
